Diarrhea

As you know a dog with diarrhea can be miserable.  It is not an easy task to clean that kind of a mess out of a crate or off the carpet.  We have found you can avoid a vet visit and expensive medications simply by feeding your dog Libby’s canned pumpkin, (right out of the can).  They love it!  The amount varies with the size and age of your dog.  For a puppy we recommend 2 tablespoons every 3 hours.  For a dog who is 25 pounds or more, you can feed ½ cup every 4-5 hours.  It usually just takes a couple of days for the diarrhea to subside. The pumpkin, (along with the dogs normal food), will sooth your dogs intestinal tract and firm up the stool.

There are many causes for diarrhea problems in dogs.  Some of the most common being parasites, food change and upset stomach, usually from eating something that they shouldn’t have or that didn’t agree with them.  We’ve also added some pro-biotic powder to the dog’s food for several days after a bout of diarrhea. It helps to build up good bacteria in the gut and aids in firming up the stool.

Note:  If your dog is having ongoing diarrhea that continues with or with out vomiting, it may be a sign of a more serious problem like Parvo or a serious, but treatable protozoa parasite picked up  at a place like a dog park, shelter or kennel,  groomer, or from drinking stagnant/infected water — you should seek veterinarian attention immediately and separate your  dog or puppy from any other dogs because they can be contagious.  Dehydration can occur faster than you think so don’t wait to call your vet.  It is safe for your dog to fast from food a day or so, but you MUST keep them hydrated.  If they won’t drink water, try adding some chicken broth to their water bowl or get a product like Rebound from Revival Animal Health.  (Rebound is a wonderful source of palatable  fluids and electrolytes made especially for dogs.)

You can find Libby’s canned pumpkin at your local grocery store and you can find pro-biotic products at most pet stores.  We order from our favorite online pet product wholesaler:     www.revivalanimal.com   It is  good idea to keep these products on hand for when you might need them.  The customer service reps at Revival all take continuing education courses so they can answer any product or healthcare questions you might have.

Responsible dog ownership is a process of learning all you can to make life better for you and your wonderful companion.  We hope this month’s tip is informative and helpful to you .
